Malin Bülow

Born 1979 in Jönköping, Sweden Lives and works in Oslo, Norway

Bülow's work resides at the intersection of textile, performance, installation, and sculpture, centered on the equivocality around the body, its borders, and norms. It evolves around two main components: elasticity and fluidity. Her installations, always site-specific, utilize flexible materials stretched into monumental sculptures, creating tension between the venue's architecture and setting and traditional representations of bodies in classical sculpture.

Seeking to induce a symbiotic relationship between body and membrane, Bülow aims for their coalescence. The movements and postures of the dancers are consequences of the highly elastic nature of the membranes, resulting in forms emerging as a finely tuned interplay between the membrane, the body, and the rigid geometry that anchors it. Each form is a transitional state, evolving like elastic sculptures with compositions that change almost imperceptibly, akin to the slowness of the dancers' movements.

Strained Resilience

Fundación Pablo Atchugarry Miami

February 18th - July 29th, 2023

Exhibiting for the first time at Miami’s Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, Norwegian based artist, Malin Bülow (born 1979, Sweden) presents, Strained Resilience, a solo exhibition operating at the convergence of installation, sculpture, and performance art. The exhibition introduces two site-specific elastic interventions, including a vertical installation of a body suspended within a membrane on the brink of rupture, and another giant translucent membrane that produces an interstitial layer creating a horizontal static tension between two opposing walls where moving bodies continuously shape-shift to suggest a resistance to given forms.
