Committed to the promotion of art from Latin America, the Piero Atchugarry booth will survey an installation and paintings by the late artist and educator Nelson Ramos, one of the most prominent artists of contemporary art in Uruguay of the 20th century. Fixated on the line as a critical element in the plane and in space, a selection of sculpture and painting dating from 1967 to 1979 highlights the artist’s interest in experimenting and transforming the way of seeing—wherein the line is not simply a line.
Throughout his career Ramos developed a unique visual syntax conceived through the coalescence of international and local artistic movements and influences. His application of minimal color and rich texture, together with the use of collage and mixed media that often incorporated found objects, underscore the dynamic nature of his work. The booth will introduce the Uruguayan informalist movement that emerged in the 1950’s and shaped Ramos’ visual language throughout the 60’s and 70’s. Drawing influences from international art movements such as Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, the informalist movement emphasized spontaneity, texture and abstraction in art, valuing emotional expression and individual creativity. In a constant pursuit of renewal and playful freedom throughout his lifetime, Ramos elicits a constructive willingness to embrace that a line is not simply a line. Ramos represented Uruguay in various major biennials, most notably the 1963/1969 Sāo Paulo Biennial and the Venice Biennale of 1997. His works are in major museums and private collections throughout the world.
